Community Health Research
A socially conscious research experience for aspiring physicians and public health leaders
The strongest medical school applicants don't just understand science — they understand the communities that science is meant to serve. Admissions committees at BS/MD, BS/DO, and top pre-med programs increasingly look for students who can engage with health disparities thoughtfully, conduct meaningful research, and articulate why medicine matters beyond the laboratory.
The NESA Community Health Research Initiative is built for exactly that student.
Participants engage with medicine where it has the greatest human impact — in the community. Through real health disparity projects, students design and carry out socially conscious research that addresses questions practicing physicians and public health leaders are actively working to answer. The result is a body of work that resonates deeply with admissions committees and reflects the kind of physician each student aims to become.
What makes this program different
Two elements distinguish this initiative from typical summer programs:
-
Grounding in formal medical literature, teaching students to read, evaluate, and synthesize peer-reviewed research the way medical and graduate students do — and giving them real exposure to how academic research is conducted
-
A sustained focus on communication, with structured development of public speaking and presentation skills for science fairs, community forums, and eventually medical school interviews
What participants take away
-
An original community health research project suitable for application essays, interviews, and competitions
-
Fluency in reading and synthesizing peer-reviewed medical literature
-
Strong public speaking, presentation, and scientific communication skills
-
A clearer, more articulate sense of why they want to practice medicine — a question every BS/MD interview asks
Who it's for
High school students preparing for BS/MD, BS/DO, and competitive pre-med admissions who want their research and service to reflect a genuine commitment to community health and the human side of medicine.
